THE SANGHA RETREAT

Getting Ourselves Ready - Day 1

We began with cleansing and clearing processes in order to generate a sanctuary where each participant could begin their transformational journey without the burden of their past, and their old self, readying ourselves for yoga, meditations, nature hikes, journaling, inquiry, and reflection.

We all participated in a smudging ceremony to clear ourselves and the space. The smudging was delivered by a elder and shaman of the indigenous Native American tribe here at Zion. The ceremony also allowed us to bring forth the spirits from all four directions South, East, West and North, heaven and earth to guide us on our journey.

We also performed another ceremony using a Native American "talking stick." The talking stick is an ancient totem that when held insists you tell your deepest truth. We passed the talking stick, one to another, and asked each to be "wise and to only speak wisdom." And after each participant spoke they ended their sharing with "I have spoken," and then passed the talking stick to the next person.

We are now ready for the next steps on this journey from older to elder, from age to sage, to discover our dharma, to open ourselves to that which is greater than ourselves.

Day 2: Today we enter the park to be in the magnificent and awe-inspiring space of this remarkable place, a shrine of nature, the spirits of the mountains, and the deepening kinship of the Sangha.
