HOW THEY EXIST FOR AN ELDER AND WHY IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

So, what makes an Elder an Elder instead of just an older person?

It's their wisdom.

But Elder wisdom isn't about knowing facts or stats. It's not about having a ton of life experience just for the sake of it, as in "My last trip to Barcelona was divine. The food was outstanding."

Elder wisdom is more like a slow-cooked bouillabaisse that has been simmering for years, bringing together layers of intuition, reflection, and clarity. And this wisdom fundamentally changes how Elders experience the most basic element of existence: time itself.

The Difference in How Wisdom Works

You see, conventional wisdom is like that friend who always insists on checking the weather app before leaving the house, even though you both know they never follow the forecast anyway. You know the type: they're glued to their phone, still squinting at a blurry screen as if it's going to change everything. That's conventional wisdom: trying to predict the storm with information that doesn't capture the whole story.

But Elder wisdom? That's like my experienced Native American friend, Robert Mirabal, who knows how to look up at the sky and feel the wind on his skin. He doesn't need to check the weather app—he can already tell it's going to rain. He's lived through enough storms to sense when one is coming. He doesn't rely solely on the data; he understands the rhythm of nature itself.

This same intuitive understanding is precisely what transforms how Elders experience the flow of time.

How Elders Experience Time

Elder wisdom is like sitting in a quiet room, where time itself seems to bend and stretch. Imagine you're watching a film reel. For most people, it's as if they're watching a movie scene by scene, one moment at a time—trapped in the sequential progression of events.

But for an Elder, it's like they've stepped out of the film and can watch the entire reel, from beginning to end, simultaneously. The past, present, and future all unfold in front of them, with no linear constraints. They understand that time isn't a straight line—it's a web of interconnected moments, where everything influences everything else.

This expanded time perspective creates something remarkable: it liberates them from the ego's desperate need to control each moment.

Freedom from the Ego's Prison

When you can see the whole pattern of time, the ego's urgent demands suddenly seem... small. That annoying little voice that tells you to "prove yourself" or "make sure everyone knows how smart you are" loses its power when you understand you're part of something much larger.

Elder wisdom has learned to see past all that surface-level noise and get to the very heart of the matter. Elder wisdom gets down to the "doer" not the "deed."

Elders have already had many existential crises, found the needed answers, and moved on to more important things in life. This isn't about being out of touch—quite the opposite. They're incredibly in touch with the world, with others, and most importantly, with themselves.

And this liberation from ego, combined with their expanded view of time, manifests as something unmistakable: authentic presence.

The Power of Presence

When an Elder enters the room, it's like the whole atmosphere shifts. You can feel it. They don't need to say much. They don't need to grab attention. They just are. Their energy speaks louder than words ever could. Most are still trying to get our act together. But Elders?

They have no act.

This authentic presence—free from ego's demands and grounded in an understanding of time's true nature—gives them a unique power in the world.

The Power to Prevent and Protect

Ultimately, this wisdom empowers them to prevent future harm, not just to themselves, but to everyone around them. Because they can see the patterns across time, and because their ego isn't demanding immediate gratification, they know where things are headed.

They can stop the train wreck before it happens.

Elders are the ones who can look into the future, raise an eyebrow, and say, "I've seen this before. Here's what's going to happen and here's how it can be fixed."

So, while conventional wisdom is busy checking the weather app, Elder wisdom is already out the door, umbrella in hand, heading for higher ground.

The Challenge We Face

Now, the trick is, how do we get a culture that's so busy checking its screen to start listening to this kind of wisdom? That's the real challenge. But hey, if anyone can do it, it's the Elders. We're working on it. Even though it is much more challenging in today's modern, youth-obsessed, more-is-better, speed-counts, technology-is-king world, we're making progress. Elders have patience, intention, and wisdom—the right keys to unlock the listening for Elder wisdom.

THE LESSON

Elder wisdom reshapes time itself. For the Elder, the past isn't just memory—it's meaning. The present isn't a distraction—it's presence.

And the future isn't mysterious, it's momentum. They don't just live in time; they work with time.

This is what makes the difference.

Older people have lived through the decades. Elders carry them. They carry the scars, the lessons, the humility, and the grace. And they do something rare: they offer it back, not as opinion, but as teachings.

In a culture that worships the now, Elders bring the who. In a world hypnotized by speed, they offer depth. While others run toward the next new thing, Elders are the ones who ask the question no one else thinks to ask—and wait for the real answer.

That's why it makes a difference. Because when time is seen through the eyes of an Elder, life is no longer a sequence of events—it becomes a symphony of meaning. And when Elders take their rightful place in culture, the future finally has a chance to grow up.
